The School Sport Australia Cross Country Championships were held in Tasmania from Friday 11 to Monday 14 August. We had three Preparatory School students represent South Australia at this event. Erin Shepherd (Year 5 Mace), Reilly Curran (Year 5 Crown) and Katie Natt (Year 6 Crown). These students represented their school and state with distinction. Erin competed in the 10 year olds event and finished 13th in her individual race, and was 6th in the teams’ event, and 5th in the relay. Reilly and Katie competed in the 11 year olds event, with Katie finishing 33rd and Reilly 37th in the individual race. They finished 4th in the team event and won bronze in the relay.

ICAS Writing

The International Competitions for Australian Schools (ICAS) are held annually through the University of NSW in many subject areas.

36 students elected to be involved in the ICAS Writing Competition from Years 3 to 7. Westminster students were awarded three Distinction, 12 Credit, three Merit and 18 Participation certificates.

Students awarded Distinctions were Harry Davison (Year 3 Wesley), Sebastian Ireland (Year 5 Crown) and Veda Muthineni (Year 6 Charter).

Our Musicians Shine

Recently Westminster School hosted the ABODA Festival (Australian Band and Orchestra Directors’ Association). Every year we host this three day event which sees students from both primary and secondary schools in South Australia perform in graded sections. These performances are adjudicated, and feedback and awards are given. Two of our Preparatory School music groups performed and we were very proud of their results. Firstly our Years 5/6/7 String Ensemble, which is directed by Mrs Jenny Symonds, performed in the Novice/Junior String Ensemble, and were awarded a Gold. Then our Preparatory School Concert Band, which is directed by Ms Karen Wandel, performed in the Junior Concert Band section, and were awarded a Gold. We also have students who are a part of Senior School Big Bands. William Bradley (Year 7 Charter), James Caudle (Year 7 Abbey), Austin Worrell (Year 7 Charter), and Josh Rycroft (Year 7 Wesley) are members of Big Band 3; they were awarded a Gold and also declared as outright winners in their section. Andrew Draper (Year 7 Abbey) is a member of Big Band 2 and they were also awarded Gold. Aimee Benton (Year 7 Mace) plays in the Senior Strings who were awarded Gold, and she also plays in the Senior Orchestra who were awarded Silver. These are really amazing results. Congratulations to all of our young musicians for their hard work and for representing Westminster School so well at this event.

SAPSASA District Athletics Day

Last Thursday, Westminster Preparatory School sent a team of athletes to compete in the South West SAPSASA District Athletics day.  Overall, Westminster won the day with all the athletes performing exceptionally well. While the official results are forthcoming and will be included in upcoming communications. I would like to thank the staff that provided the opportunities for our athletes to grow and improve leading up to competition.

Please keep the germs at bay

It seems we are at a stage of the winter season where the germs are abounding. I would ask that if you child is unwell that you do your very best to keep them at home. I know it is not always possible, but where it is, we should try to keep the germs away from the classroom where they are likely to spread rather than be contained. Please also note that if your child has been vomiting or has gastro then they need to be away from school for 24 hours from last symptoms.
