Year 10 Music with the ASO!

On Friday 25 May the Year 10 music class performed as part of the Friends of the ASO Cinema classics concert. They opened the concert with music from Back to the Future, Lord of the Rings, and Mission Impossible. They were then able to sit back and enjoy watching some very talented soloists perform, before they closed the concert with music from The Jersey Boys, Indiana Jones, and finally the Blues Brothers. The final number included some audience participation trying out a few dance moves.

The students finished the morning sharing in some lunch with the other performers and the audience. They received some great feedback as they chatted to people.

Thanks to Mr Darren McLachlan for driving the music van with all of our gear. Well done to Ms Harrison and Ms Gould for preparing the Year 10 class and providing this wonderful opportunity for them.

Dr Anita Collins

On Friday 1 June some of our Preparatory and Senior School students were very privileged to work with Dr Anita Collins, who specialises in “Music and the Brain”. Dr Collins spent two lessons with some of our Senior music students, discussing what happens to your brain when you play a musical instrument!

Dr Collins also worked with the Year 3 classes who performed for the first time as whole ensemble. All Year 3 students learn a stringed instrument as a part of their music course at Westminster.

Their first performance was very impressive. A number of parents were given a brief by Dr Collins, and they also joined in to see their children perform. Thanks to the parents who were able to come along and see this presentation.

It was a wonderful experience to have Dr Collins talk about the massive impact of playing an instrument and how it has such a great and significant impact on brain development.

Dr Collins has been working with Guy Sebastian and James Morrison to produce a three part series entitled “Don’t Stop the Music” which will be released on the ABC in November, a part of one of the biggest national launches for music we have seen. Stay tuned for that!

Big Band Bash

Last Sunday 3 June Westminster Big Band One took part in the annual Big Band Bash at the Gov, in memory of the late Mike Stewart. Big Band One performed three pieces to close the show and were very well received by an appreciative audience. This included a new piece they have been working on since their performance at Generations in Jazz.

Congratulations to all the members of Big Band One for a well executed performance, and thanks to all the friends and parents who came along to support the students.

Sing Sing Sing

On Wednesday 20 June the annual Sing Sing Sing concert will take place at 6.30 pm in the MMC. The Friends of Music will once again provide refreshments before the concert for parents, friends and families that have to drop their sons and daughters off pre-concert.

Like Bandstand, this will be a short concert, normally running for about an hour.

This involves all the choirs in the school and as tradition, they will meet at the end of the concert for a combined item, always a fantastic spectacle.

There are no tickets for sale but we would welcome a gold coin donation.
